Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Product

Why are your products so expensive?

Our prices reflect the care and time it takes to make quality products.

We specifically use untreated wood materials to ensure cats’ safety. Treated wood can leech harmful chemicals, which should not be ingested by cats. Even though treated wood is inexpensive and easily sourced, we choose to use untreated wood.

We do not use MDF because pine plywood offers better stability for the screws. We use plywood and carpet rather than cardboard and cloth because they last longer.

We care about aesthetics. Even the bottoms of the platforms are carpeted, and craftsmanship is reflected through clean carpet joins. We do not cut corners.

We use glue free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Yes, it is more expensive than a cat post made from cardboard. However you won’t need to buy one every year to replace it! They charge a hundred dollars plus for something that you will need to keep rebuying. Our products are meant to last.

Our materials are locally sourced and where possible New Zealand made. Your purchase supports Wellington businesses and keeps your hard-earned dollars on shore. Most importantly by buying local, you are not just keeping regular New Zealanders employed. You’re putting food on tables, keeping rooves over heads, paying for school fees and keeping little cat bellies full!

What are you cat trees made of?

Our cat furniture is made from untreated New Zealand pine and locally sourced carpets. In general, the carpets are also New Zealand and Australian made. We also use New Zealand made untreated plywood for our base and platforms. We do not use MDF.

Are your products topple-proof?

Our products are intended to be topple proof for cat usage only. A cat using the cat tree or post should not topple the product as our bases are built thick and wide enough to keep it stable. All our products are tested by cats weighing between 1-6kg. We have had some cat scratching posts topple when humans or dogs lean excessively on the product. We recommend you keep your products away from heating sources or areas where young children may get hurt if it falls. We recommend you bolt any cat tree to the wall to prevent toppling during an earthquake.

Do your products come pre-assembled?

Yes, all products are fully assembled. We take pride in constructing products that will last. Therefore the base, post and platforms are firmly secured into place with screws and glue where appropriate. There are no incomprehensible flat pack directions here!

Are your products heavy?

Our cat scratching posts are easily movable with the power of one person. Our two-tier cat trees can be lifted by one person also although the wider base variety may be a little difficult to maneuver. We recommend two people move our three tier cat trees as these can be quite heavy to move and maneuver.

The Solid range, made with garage carpet, is the lightest to carry. The products will be heavier depending on how thick the carpet is.

How long will your products last?

The structure of your cat post i.e. the wood should last for years with correct use. Our current cat tree is over twenty years old and has served five cats over their lifetimes.

The carpet coverings will eventually need to be replaced when you can see the carpet backing. Please return to Pompom Pets when this happens, and we can replace the carpet for a discounted price. Please see our Refurbishment Programme and Trade-in Programme pages.

We recommend you keep your products away from any temperature fluctuations, direct sunlight, and places of high humidity. Your products will warp over time due to the wood being untreated.

Product Care

My tree is looking worn already, what can I do?

During normal use the cats will scratch away the pile of the carpet and after a while the carpet will wear away to reveal the backing. When this happens you can bring your product back to Pompom Pets and we can refurbish it with new carpet of your choosing, at a discounted price. Please check our Refurbishment Programme page for more details. If you see fluff coming away from your scratching post just brush, vacuum it away or snip it off with scissors.

How do I take care of my cat tree?

We recommend you keep your products away from any temperature fluctuations, direct sunlight, and places of high humidity. Your products will warp over time due to the wood being untreated.

If you see fluff coming away from your scratching post just brush, vacuum it away or snip it off with scissors.

If your cat has an accident, please spot treat the area with the cleanser of your choice. Dab the area to lift the stain, but do not rub it in. Please refrain from soaking the area. Excess moisture will warp the wood and lift the carpet glue. For the same reason, do not steam treat the products.
