About Us

Meet Pompom, the muse of Masamitsu and Bex Hisamatsu. In 2024, Pompom broke into their home through an open window and refused to leave. Despite spending years as a runaway bush cat, she settled into domesticated life quickly. Pompom adored the cat tree Bex’s dad made over twenty years ago for previous family cats. Scratching, leaping, playing, eating and sleeping on the cat tree became her favourite past times. Through comfort came confidence. No longer skittish and nervous, she started to rule the house. The couple decided to refurbish their existing cat furniture and create new cat trees especially for Pompom.

Using carpets provided by Bex’s family flooring business, Masamitsu developed the prototypes and refined the designs. With the goal of making the furniture safe, sturdy, stylish and functional, Masamitsu built five initial products. After Pompom’s thorough testing and quality control checks, Pompom Pets launched it’s online store in 2025. In 2026, Pompom Pets opened its workshop and retail section for local customers.

Pompom Pets provides the pet lovers of Wellington with quality cat furniture enabling cats, whether abled bodied or disabled, a chance to elevate their quality of life with tactile materials and platforms ranging from 45cm-160cm. We have a selection of cat posts, cat trees and ramps for every feline and every space.

All products are handmade to order and delivered to your door or can be picked up at our Petone workshop. We welcome bespoke commissions for customers wanting to match cat furniture to their interiors. Our products help cats reach higher places in their homes and give them a sense of place, a piece of furniture that’s just for them.

Our Design

At Pompom Pets we design our furniture in house. We carefully design our products to be safe, sturdy, stylish and functional. Those core values guide our design decisions. We care about aesthetics and don’t cut corners. Our products look great from every angle. Want something unique? We offer a bespoke design service for customers wanting to colour match carpets to their homes. We believe in cat centred design to improve feline wellbeing and accessibility. Our Construction

We pick quality materials free from toxic chemicals and take pride in constructing products that will last for years. Where possible we source our materials from New Zealand suppliers. Sick of flimsy cat towers? We build strong bases to reduce wobbling and toppling. Our products are meant to be loved, not discarded. We offer refurbishment and trade-in programmes caring for your cats and the environment.

Our Inspiration

Pompom Pets was created for a love of our own cats. A 20-year-old homemade cat tree inspired our Pompom Pets prototypes. It’s still standing and perfectly useable. When we say ‘built to last’ we mean it. This cat tower has not been refurbished and has served five well-loved kitties over the years. Rest in peace Paddy, Kisa, Moomoo and Zeus. We have improved the initial design making the product out of untreated wood and using thicker platforms to prevent warping.
